The Red Violin tells the amazing story of a musical instrument from its birth, more than three centuries ago, to the present day. The film has a complex structure (though quite easy to follow) with five different timelines, each telling a significant episode in the life of the instrument.
The main storyline is set in modern day Montréal, where the violin, a long lost instrument with a rich and legendary history, is about to be sold at auction.
While the auction takes place we are taken back in time to witness stories of love, death, sacrifice and betrayal that had this unique violin as a main protagonist.
Music obviously plays an important part in this movie. Renowned American violinist Joshua Bell recorded all the violin performances, and also has a cameo appearance in the film.
